Winston-Salem State University provides a full range of benefit programs and services which support and enhance the employment relationship of faculty and staff.

Comprehensive benefit programs are an essential part of one’s total compensation and are designed to provide income security for future needs, assist with meeting the costs of health care, and provide a generous program of paid time off to help balance the demands of work and family.

State Health Plan Major Medical

The State Health Plan's Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans offer freedom of choice among in-network providers, lower out-of-pocket costs and a strong emphasis on preventive health.

Traditional 70/30 Plan
Enhanced 80/20 Plan
High Deductible Health Plan

All permanent full-time employees who work 30 or more hours per week are eligible for coverage. Employees selecting the Standard plan will pay an additional monthly premium for employee only coverage. Spouses and legally dependent children up to age 26 (if not eligible for their own or their spouse's employer sponsored health coverage or be in the military) are also eligible for coverage under both plans at group rates.

To receive the maximum coverage under the PPO plan, you must see in-network providers. The State Health Plan's local provider network for the PPO is managed by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. To locate a doctor or hospital near you, use SHNPC Find a Doctor.

Affordable Care Act

The health care plan that the State will offer to those newly eligible under the Affordable Care Act. This would include eligible temps, students or part-time faculty who become newly eligible under the ACA law.

Health and Wellness

The Health and Wellness component of Winston-Salem State University’s Human Resources Department was created to provide students, staff, and faculty members with an abundant source of health and wellness information, resources, and activities being held on the campus of Winston-Salem State University and throughout the Forsyth community. The Human Resources Department will serve as a liaison between various departments in order to promote events, lifestyle changes and healthy rams for life.

Employee Assistance Program

Personal issues, planning for life events or simply managing daily life can affect your work, health and family. The Winston-Salem State University Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provides support, resources and information for personal and work-life issues. The EAP is university-sponsored, confidential and provided at no charge to you and your dependents, this page explains how the EAP can help you and your family deal with everyday challenges.

Health Plans

Two Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans are available to UNC faculty and staff (SHRA & EHRA). State Health Plan of North Carolina administers these plans and they are underwritten by Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina which offers coverage for in-network and/or out-of-network providers. The University contributes toward the monthly cost of coverage for regular full-time employees.
