Resetting the Password for a Local Account on a Mac

Purpose:

Provide instructions on how to reset the password for the local account on a Mac and ultimately get to log in through the WSSU credentials. If a computer is off of the network for an extended period of time and the user's password gets changed for whatever reason, the computer will not sync the update. This method allows the user to change the password for the local account which is needed to get to the Azure (RAM ID) login.

Getting Started:

Resetting the password for the local account on a Mac

By accessing recovery mode, you can reset your Mac password. Here’s how you can access Recovery Mode on an M1 Mac:

  1. Submit a RAMTech ticket to request the unlock key for your device. Please provide the serial number of the computer. If you need help finding the serial number, please reference this article: Find the serial number of your Apple product - Apple Support
    • Techs: You can find the unlock code in Jamf > Computers > Search for serial number > Inventory > Disk encryption > Personal Recovery Key
  2. Turn off your computer.
  3. Press and hold the power button until the prompt says "Loading Startup Options"
  4. Click “Options” and select “Continue.”
  5. Type the recovery key
  6. Click forgot all passwords
  7. Select your local account. Note: This is not the same as the password for your RAM ID.
  8. Type the new password
  9. Type the new password in the second box to confirm it
  10. The password hint box is optional
  11. After resetting the password, reboot the computer
  12. Log in with the local account name and new password
  13. Make sure the computer is connected to the Internet
  14. After that, it should go to the Azure login screen. This will be your RAM ID and WSSU password

If the Azure login screen doesn't load, that means the computer is not connected to the Internet. Either a Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection will work.
