Student Reconsideration

Service Overview:

Winston-Salem State University makes every effort to assist students by providing financial assistance to help meet the cost of education. We recognize that there may be extenuating circumstances that affect your ability to provide the amount that the family is expected to pay. Certain adjustments are already considered in the calculation of a family’s ability to meet expenses in the formula that calculates financial needs. Therefore, Winston-Salem State University will not always be able to reduce your expected contribution to meet educational costs based on your unique circumstances. Special consideration is generally given only for those circumstances described below. Typically, the only additional type of financial aid the student is eligible to receive is the federal Pell Grant. Graduate and second-degree students are not eligible to receive the federal Pell Grant. The reduction in expected contribution may create more federal Subsidized Stafford Loan eligibility and thus reduce the amount of the Unsubsidized Stafford Loan.

Please Note

  • We recommend you complete your current award requirements and accept any current financial aid that you need to use to satisfy your bill.
Due to the nature of the Professional Judgment process, your request may not be completed before the payment deadline. You must pay your semester bill even if your Professional Judgment application has not been reviewed or finalized or your registration will be cancelled.

  • Applications based on recent loss of employment may not be submitted until September 1st, 2024, to allow for a more realistic adjustment to income. If we must request current information, it will delay the review of the file.

  • Applications submitted after December 1, 2024, may (and will likely) require copies of 2024 W-2 and/or 1099 forms and may not be reviewed until a 2024 IRS Tax Return Transcript can be obtained.

  • All documentation must be submitted within 20 business days from the date of notification to keep the application active.
